Solo Dolo Dads
Practical rhythms
You don’t need a perfect system. You need a few repeatable moves that keep the house and your head from falling over.
Sleep
- Same lights-out window for you and the kid when you can — even if “same” is ±30 minutes.
- Phone outside the bed after the last check. Night scrolling steals the only recovery you get.
- If you’re up for a night feed or nightmare: keep lights low, talk low, return to bed like a firefighter — job done, back to base.
- More structure: Sleep Reset
Work + dad mode
- Hard edges: name a stop time for work texts when you have the kid. The inbox will still be there.
- Batch logistics: school forms, laundry, groceries — one block, not a drip all evening.
- Ask for cover early when you know a late meeting is coming. Last-minute heroics burn you out.
- Load too high? Stress & Burnout
Kid transitions
- Hand-offs: short, calm, kid-focused. “Love you. See you Thursday.” Skip the courtroom at the curb.
- After school / daycare: snack + 10 minutes of floor time before chores. Connection first, then the list.
- Bedtime stack: bath → PJs → book → same three sentences. Boring is the feature.
- Meltdowns: you settle first, then them. Narrate: “You’re mad. I’m here. We’ll wait it out.”
Weekends
- One anchor outing (park, library, grocery with a fun stop) beats an overpacked Saturday.
- One recovery block for you — even 45 minutes while a trusted person watches, or after bedtime.
- Prep Sunday night: clothes, lunches, bag by the door. Morning-you will thank night-you.
- Raleigh ideas: local things to do
